New Year, New Snow, New Fear

With the New Year comes snow, in Missouri at least. I thought I was ready for anything now that I am free, but I severly underestimated the power of snow.

Not only do I feel like I am five years old and want to fling myself into it everyitme I walk outside, but I am terrified to drive in it. I hate the feeling of not being in control, especially behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. I have not driven in the snow in 19 years. Yes, 19 years.

I googled how to drive on snow and there were some wonderful pointers. I visualized myself in situations and what I would do and then in real life...I slid for the first time, scared the bejeebers out of me. I know the advice is to steer into the skid, now I need someone to give me advice on how to remain calm while steering into the skid.

Elliot got me a sled for Christmas, so I suppose if my fear becomes too strong I can just break out the sled and ride it to work.

You had better believe when I get off work tomorrow I am flinging myself into that snow and then I am going sledding!

Driving in Snow

I grew up in a state where it snowed. I learned to drive in snow and never thought much about it  but I moved to get away from that white fluffy stuff. I've thought about it lately and wondered myself if I would be able to deal with slip sliding away again. My advice is drive s-l-o-w-l-y because if I remember correctly it wasn't the snow that was a problem but rather hitting a patch of ice. Also, remember that the Spring Equinox is only 71 days away!

Snow Angels

Stacey, I am your sister.  I go out and jump up and down in the snow and make a snow angel the first snow of every year.  I'm 41 chronologcal years old.  Got many pictures of me doing that in sweats and a t shirt.  I would invite you to try it!  It's a blast!  Enjoy!!!

Do donuts!

Regarding driving in snow, this is what you do.  Go to a big empty parking lot.  Take off fast, then slam on the breaks, and you'll go spinning.  i learned that young.  did it til I was about 25.

I had to reply because I

I had to reply because I thought of this (car donuts!) myself; my boyfriend does this just to freak me out! He sees the parking lots at say, Sears or IKEA, & off we go in the VW! - I know a friend of mine went & took courses a few years back from any old driving school when she got freaked by the snow? So look into that - you can take "primer" courses in it! Good Luck! :D

Just do it!

Steer into the skid.  Just steer into the skid.  Remain calm.  That's it.  Speaking by experience.  Instinctively if at a point in time in the future you need to steer into the skid, you'll do it and remain calm, then you will notice your car pops out of the skid, and shoots off in the other direction, which is better than running off the road or hitting the guard rail.  Watch for black ice, the stuff you don't see.  It'll send you sailing.  Stop, breathe, focus on your driving.  be awake and alert before you put the car in drive.
